Precision and planning were paramount for this distinctive project. Our customers were exceptionally detail-oriented. With a professional background in engineering, the homeowner possessed a deep understanding of the technical complexities involved in working with century-old structures. During our initial home visit and subsequent showroom consultation, we explored various solutions to achieve their specific vision. They were particularly drawn to the authentic character of our random-width floors and appreciated the discreet design details that provide lasting value. Together, we carefully phased the work across two staircases and the intermediate levels to ensure every new surface was perfectly protected during the installation of the random width Nutmeg oak boards from our Studio Collection.

Bespoke Design & Installation

The flooring installation featured a dynamic mix of three width boards—125mm, 160mm, and 180mm—creating an organic, bespoke appearance. We planned the layout to enhance the natural flow of the home. We introduced a strategic change in direction in one of the bedrooms to follow the room's layout and usage, providing a sophisticated visual transition. Beyond aesthetics, the subfloor required significant intervention to ensure longevity.

We installed an intermediate layer of structural plywood to create a continuous, stable surface. This was especially critical as the family requires the use of an electric wheelchair; our reinforced subfloor provides the necessary support for its weight while ensuring effortless manoeuvrability. To complete the accessibility features, we crafted a seamless, sturdy transition ramp to the wheelchair lift.

Crafting a Standout Staircase

Restoring the home's two staircases presented a rewarding challenge that highlighted our expertise in traditional staircase restoration. The original 1930s structure had suffered from a century of use, resulting in significant creaking and structural misalignment. Our team worked meticulously to reduce the noise and correct the angles of the newer loft flight of stairs and the original stairs using custom stair cladding.

A standout feature was the restoration of the pronounced, widely curved bottom step, which required expert craftsmanship to clad accurately. We finished the stairs with traditional oak bullnose decorative edges complemented by elegant white-painted risers, creating a timeless look that feels as if it were part of the original architectural design.

Unmatched Durability

In a busy household with three large, energetic Golden Retrievers, durability is a primary concern. Despite the high traffic and family activity, the Studio Collection Nutmeg finish has proven exceptionally resilient.

While the large friendly dogs have inevitably caused minor surface scratches over time, the structural integrity of the finish remains intact, preventing deep damage. This project serves as a perfect example of how high-end design can meet the practical demands of a modern, active family home.
