Blending Herringbone Elegance with Board Simplicity
As is often the case, our customers are a married couple who had differing tastes when it came to their new floor. The husband favoured the clean simplicity of boards, while the wife loved the elegance of herringbone parquet. Our solution was to combine the two layouts in a way that highlighted the strengths of each, creating both harmony and balance.
We combined two layout styles on the stairs and floor.
We combined herringbone parquet and boards to highlight the strengths of both.
This project was in a semi-detached home near Blackheath.
Both tastes were satisfied, blending style and function effortlessly.
Using the same high-quality, factory-finished wood throughout, we crafted seamless joints and laid the boards with precision to ensure symmetry across each room. Herringbone parquet was chosen for the hallway, where its beauty could be admired by all, while the bedrooms and staircase were finished with boards for a more practical, functional touch. The result is a floor that satisfies both tastes, blending style and function effortlessly.
Restoring Strength with Traditional Detailing
The original staircase was a metal structure, made from a tin-like material and later covered with timber, most likely in the 1950s. In the post-war period, budgets for home construction were tight, and builders often relied on more affordable materials. Our focus was on carefully preparing and reinforcing the staircase to eliminate creaks and rattles, ensuring it was stable, solid, and built to last.

We also enhanced the design of the steps with a traditional bullnose detail, perfectly in keeping with the character of the home. The clients were delighted to preserve a timeless, traditional aesthetic, avoiding ultra-modern trends in favour of a style that complemented the property’s heritage.

Creating a Perfectly Level Floor
The customer’s newly purchased home was full of charm but came with creaky, uneven floors. An awkwardly positioned steel beam had distorted the subfloor, creating a noticeable bulge. Levelling the floor in the usual way wasn’t possible, as the height of the bulge was too great and reducing the room height significantly would have compromised the space. This challenge required a creative Fin Wood solution—where we see opportunities, not problems.
Recent buyers sought something special to make their home their own.
We added warmth and continuity throughout the upper floors.
A subtle transition from one format to another.
Our finished work complemented the floor installed by the previous owner.
After careful assessment, we removed the wood directly above the beam and reinforced the surrounding floor structure. We then overlaid the area with thinner plywood, skilfully bringing the entire surface to a perfectly flat and stable level. The result was a solid, refined foundation ready for a flawless finish.
The entire surface of the first floor was made perfectly flat.
A smooth transition between the parquet and boards.
Skilfully levelled the floor for a perfectly flat, stable surface.
Herringbone was chosen for the hallway and boards for the bedrooms.
The customers left a glowing five star review.
Alin is the most honest and reliable contractor I have worked with for my home renovation. His team was professional, responsible, and paid great attention to detail. I waited six months after completing the project to write this review, and I can confidently say that the flooring they installed has no odor at all, and the overall finish is excellent.
What I’m most satisfied with is the stairs. The overall design and appearance are exactly what I envisioned. I highly recommend Alin and his team.
