Honey coloured engineered oak boards expertly fitted with a feature staircase and custom made handrail, Welling DA11
#CreaftedForLife
This project saw visionary new owners in an untouched 1950s house taking on a total house refurb. Our scope of work included fitting wide honey coloured engineered oak boards in the large downstairs living room, entrance hallway and a narrower version of the same boards in the three upstairs bedrooms and landing. We also strengthened and crafted a feature staircase and custom handrail. This was a large project, a significant investment and undoubtedly a massive improvement to totally remove all the old carpet and fit new, clean, wood floors all throughout.

Wide honey coloured engineered oak boards downstairs
We fitted wide honey coloured engineered oak boards in the large downstairs living room and entrance hallway. We thermally insulated the ground with mineral insulation to reduce heat loss through the floor and still allow the subfloor to breathe. We strengthened the subfloor and reconstructed it with 18mm thick plywoood for extra strength. We secured the floor boards with screws to make sure it was secure. A clean, insulated, strong subfloor is an excellent base for any new wooden floor. We then installed the wonderful new wooden floorboards throughout and fitted new skirting boards. We applied a clear oil to keep the natural colour of the wood. The honey coloured wood is complemented by the sunshine streaming through the reception room windows making the colour look even richer.

Narrower honey coloured engineered oak boards upstairs
We used the same colour engineered oak boards upstairs, just slightly narrower, 125mm x 15mm. Often the additional thickness is not needed upstairs and narrower boards work out slightly cheaper. Most bedroom floors are largely covered with beds and furniture and you’re not able to admire the beauty of wide boards and narrow more cost effective boards work well. Usually you do not need the extra thickness upstairs as there is less noticeable wear and tear and the floor will need to be sanded very infrequently, at most once in 20 years.

Honey coloured engineered boards used to handcraft feature staircase
The original staircase was in a poor condition and needed restrengthening. The old handrail needed replacing and the newel posts were missing. We designed the handrail to fit on the left hand side to accommodate the three exposed steps on the ground floor. We adapted the structure of the stairs from a full stringer to an open cut stringer to reveal the structure of the stairs and make the staircase feel more airy and less boxy. We constructed the custom handrail from the same wood as the stairs, all handmade by Fin Wood’s finest craftsman. We cladded the step with the oak boards and applied an anti-slip oil for safety. The customers were delighted with the transformation of their home.
