A wonderful combination of herringbone oak parquet and oak boards, expertly matched in colour Wimbledon SW18
#CraftedForLife
This project took place in a well loved family home in need of some refurbishment. We were tasked with a two phase project. First to thermally insulate and install a new herringbone oak parquet in the living room. And then secondly to sand and refinish the entire ground floor to the same colour.
Expertly restored oak boards in the kitchen extension.
A well loved, semi-detached family home in Wimbledon.
Thermal insulation in the living room
The customers were concerned to make their living room more cosy and comfortable and decided to thermally insulate the draughty living room floor. We removed the old carpet and old subfloor. We cleaned in between the joists and removed old rubble and building material which can allow moisture to build up. We installed wire mesh and filled them with a mineral wool which has great insulting properties and also allows the subfloor to breathe. We reconstructed the floor with strong 80mm hardwood plywood over the joists.
The living room is now thermally insulated.
There is now also a strong plywood subfloor.
Installing a new oak herringbone parquet
We sourced similar sized parquet blocks of a broadly similar grade to the existing parquet in the hallway. We opted for a slightly more premier grade for a cleaner look with fewer knots and twisted grain. We recommend a superior grade for living rooms used as an adult space. The new parquet was unfinished ready to be sanded and oiled with the rest of the ground floor. Due to the slightly different sized blocks, we designed a double border to seamlessly separate the living room and hallway.

Sanding the whole ground floor
The next stage of the project was to thoroughly sand the whole ground floor including the new living room parquet and the existing parquet and boards. The existing floor in the hallway and kitchen extension had been well used. This restoration work would transform the condition of the floor and bring it back to its original beauty.
We cleared the furniture as agreed, and stored it in the garden office and protected the built in furniture. At the completion of the project we put everything back in its place.
We sanded the floor using a Laegler Hummel and Trio to provide good even sanding which allows for a wonderful finish. We anticipated, after sanding there would be some scuffs around the skirting boards and a painting session of the skirting boards was prearranged.

Oiling and colour matching the whole ground floor
After much discussion and colour sampling, we settled on the right colour for the floor. We evenly oiled the grain consistently across the whole ground floor to bring back its natural wood colour. We applied two coats for extra protection. The customer was very happy with their new and improved floor which they can enjoy for many years to come.
