Reclaimed, recycled and reused pine floors

Located within a handsome Victorian property in Tufnell Park, this light-filled apartment provided the perfect setting for our latest project. The home owners were delighted to discover their property had the original pine floor boards. Over many decades, natural oxidation and light exposure had enriched the pine with a deep, warm patina. Knots, subtle wear marks, and tonal variation contribute to an authentic, lived-in aesthetic that perfectly complements period architecture.

Unfortunately, these original floorboards had deteriorated significantly over time, and many were no longer structurally sound enough to be retained. Wherever possible, boards in suitable condition were carefully salvaged and repurposed within the loft conversion, where the smaller floor area allowed the remaining material to be utilised effectively. A new flooring solution was therefore required throughout the main living spaces, ensuring both longevity and aesthetic continuity throughout the home.

Subfloor Preparation and Acoustic Insulation

Creating a durable floor starts from the ground up. The original floors showed the natural effects of age and settlement common in period homes, leading to uneven surfaces. Our clients wanted a perfectly level floor that also offered improved acoustic performance.

To achieve this, we carried out extensive subfloor preparation, incorporating a high-performance impact sound reduction membrane beneath a robust, level plywood subfloor. This foundation ensures long-term stability and enhanced comfort for years to come.

Reclaimed Engineered Pine Flooring with Silk Matt Finish

Having admired the character and authenticity of the original pine floorboards, our customers were keen to retain the same sense of age, warmth and individuality with the new flooring. Rather than opting for a newly manufactured product, they sourced reclaimed pine boards through a specialist supplier, with the timber salvaged from a local Victorian country house.

This approach provides the best of both worlds: the charm and character of traditional timber flooring, bonded to a birch plywood backing for superior stability. This engineered construction minimises seasonal movement, gaps, and distortion, ensuring your investment remains beautiful regardless of changing humidity.
