Antique Oak Herringbone Parquet in Georgian Mansion Apartment, Canonbury N1
#CraftedForLife
This expansive historic apartment spans two adjoining Georgian properties, forming a rare and characterful Grade II listed home. The interior retains an abundance of period features, including original fireplaces, decorative cornicing, sash windows and working shutters, all complemented by generous ceiling heights and views across the square’s beautiful mature gardens. Due to the apartment’s unique layout across two neighbouring buildings, the apartment had different floor levels which required a considered and precise approach throughout the installation.
Working in Accordance with Grade II Listed Building Requirements
A key element of the project involved levelling the existing subfloor. As the property is Grade II listed, the clients made a number of enquiries with the council which delayed the progress of the project and in the end unfortunately restricted solutions. For example, the original pine floorboards had to be retained and could not be removed from the site. To meet the client’s request for improved acoustic performance, the existing boards were carefully lifted, the subfloor void cleared of accumulated debris, and the acoustic insulation was neatly packed in.

This antique oak herringbone parquet created a refined and characterful finish.

The original boards were then reinstated, with only minimal replacement where absolutely necessary, to ensure the subfloor was stable and structurally sound. The skirting boards were temporarily removed to facilitate the levelling works, and new skirtings were installed upon completion, providing a clean and cohesive finish throughout.

Antique Oak Herringbone Parquet with Bespoke Oiled Finish
An antique oak herringbone parquet block was selected for this project, a fitting choice for a period property. The blocks, measuring 70 x 280mm at 15mm thickness, were factory finished, offering both colour consistency and durability. The herringbone pattern introduces a timeless sense of structure and elegance, enhancing the overall character of the space. Oak remains a classic and highly versatile species, valued for its strength and ability to accommodate a wide range of finishes. The aged appearance of the parquet evokes the charm of a reclaimed floor, with rich variation and depth that sit comfortably within a traditional setting.

The antique oiled finish provides a deep, warm tone that accentuates the natural grain of the timber. By penetrating the wood, the oil both protects and enhances its texture, creating a layered and refined appearance. Parquet flooring is exceptionally versatile, suited to all areas of the home. Whether it’s used to create a strong first impression in a hallway or to bring warmth and elegance to living spaces and bedrooms, it offers a timeless solution that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Precision Installation with Mitred Borders and Seamless Parquet Flow
Particular attention was given to the detailing throughout the installation. We introduced a refined single-row border along the perimeter of the floor, and carefully turned around door frames to create a seamless, unified floor across the property, without visual interruption between rooms. All borders were precisely mitred to maintain a continuous flow, and each space was carefully measured to establish optimal setting out lines, ensuring a balanced and harmonious parquet layout. This considered approach allowed us to avoid narrow or unsightly cuts at the perimeter.
