Restoring an existing walnut floor back to its original richness and skillfully fitting new walnut boards in Wimbledon SW20
#CraftedForLife
This project took place in an attractive 1930s art deco block of flats in the new penthouse apartment added in more recent years. The penthouse apartment boasts ample space, abundant natural light, and a contemporary ambiance. The property featured an existing walnut wooden floor in the hallway and the expansive open plan kitchen living area. The objective of this project was to sand and restore the old walnut floors to reintroduce the richness, colour, and warmth of walnut and expertly match and provide new walnut boards for the bedrooms introducing the same richness and warmth throughout the entire property.

Expertly matching the old and new
We used matching walnut engineered boards of a very similar size with only a couple of mm difference. The product - Walnut Board Premier Unsealed Natural 20x180mm - is available direct from Fin Wood. We introduced a change of direction in the bedrooms to accommodate the mm difference in size. We seamlessly joined the old floor and the new so there was no detection of difference underfoot maintaining a continuous warm floor throughout the home.

Beautifully restoring old boards
The new boards were of a higher grade than the original floor. They did not have any distracting yellow sapwood. There was previously a disturbing dissonance between the rich dark walnut and yellow sap patches that we set about to improve. We sanded and stained the existing boards to darken the sap wood and reduce the noticeable difference.

The customers cleared the property of furniture which is especially helpful for effective sanding. A clear surface is essential for a good, scratch free finish. After we were professionally satisfied with the sanding we applied two coats of osmo Polyx oil satin. The new floor was untreated and we applied the Osmo Polyx oil satin finish to the whole floor. We created a dark walnut floor with irresistible warm chocolate tones. It is worth mentioning that walnut in all its beauty is a softwood and is best suited in pet free, adult spaces.
