Following the lockdown customers were keen to refresh their large 1930s semi-detached home. Already decluttered and freshly painted it was now time to replace the old carpet and laminate floor. The project involved installing a herringbone parquet with a single row border in the spacious entrance hallway and living room and sanding and finishing the existing floor in the kitchen and downstairs toilet.

Herringbone parquet

The customers opted for large herringbone parquet blocks in the entrance hallway and living room for a classic statement floor on arrival and in the more formal reception room. The blocks were 100mm (w) x 600mm (l) and the floor was finished with clear Osmo oil polyx. The customers opted for a single row border mitred at the corners. We prefer and recommend this single row design feature as it makes the border flow nicely and without any odd sections. We added an extra coat of oil to increase the level of protection of the parquet

The customer was keen to preserve the original skirting boards of the 1930s house in Streatham. We agreed to undercut the skirting boards so the flooring could sit neatly underneath. This meant that we didn’t have to use any unsightly beading, which would have ruined the clean lines of the floor. We removed the carpet and the gripper rods and checked the condition of the subfloor floorboards. As needed we put screws in to fix down loose pieces and secure a strong surface for the new floor. We fixed an intermediate layer of plywood over the subfloor to create a continuous surface to install the herringbone parquet properly. We checked and measured the walls and calculated the right alignment to set the starting line to make the floor symmetrical and pleasing.

Sanding and finishing

We sanded the original pine floor in the kitchen and downstairs toilet and finished the floor to colour match the new parquet floor. We used a laegler trio, and laegler hummel and legler flip and laegler single combined system for quality sanding. We finished with the same oil as the parquet - Osmo oil polyx clear satin.

Special touches

We always recommend integrated choir mats to help keep your new floor clean. The customers were very interested in this feature and we think it's a smart addition to the hallway space. We crafted a frame around the fireplace to accentuate the fireplace and compliment the single row border. Another special feature was the curved border around the bottom step. This perfectly rounded border is a discreet display of our craftsmanship.

‘Impeccable quality’

The project is in a happy family home with children. The parents spent lots of time researching the wood and finding expert installers. We were identified through the best way - a trusted recommendation from a friend.
“Alin is very professional and pays attention to detail. The quality of work is impeccable. He was helpful and able to give advice regarding the choice of wood, colour, quality and more. He kept us up to date with progress of the work regularly. When the work was completed, our home was left in a clean and tidy fashion.
I would recommend Alin and his company any day.”
