If you have a wooden floor that’s looking a bit tired and needs renovating, it always pays to use a professional company with plenty of experience.  Without the know-how, it’s very easy to do more harm than good.  This was particularly true when we were called in to salvage a beautiful solid wood, Panga Panga herringbone parquet floor, which was fitted throughout the ground floor of a house in Chelsea.

The parquet had been down for over 10 years. During this time, the finish had become dull and the surface had a worn appearance, full of scratches and dents. Initially, a French Polisher was called in to renovate the wood. However, their skills, experience and tools, which work so well with furniture, were completely inadequate when it came to the wood flooring. Once the homeowners became aware of this, we were appointed to rectify the work and completely renovate the floor.

Before we started, we discussed the proposed approach with our clients. As they have a dog, it was important to use the right products, allowing for minimal future maintenance and longevity of the floor. We recommended an oil finish, instead of lacquer, as with this finish it’s possible to spot repair the floor. This means that any future scratches can be removed and treated easily, without the need to sand and reseal the entire floor.

We always use the latest equipment to ensure that all of our work is carried out to the highest standards, with minimal disruption and mess. In this instance, our first task was to sand off the badly applied sealer and old lacquer along with the dents and scratches. Using our dustless sanding equipment we removed around 1,5 mm from the top of the wood to expose the bare untreated timber and to remove all dents and scratches. After a thorough vacuum, the first coat of oil was applied with a roller and then buffed to work it into the floor. The oil was then left to cure overnight. Once dry, we used the same method to apply the second coat.

It’s always a good idea to keep a wooden floor well maintained, but when it’s made from such a rare exotic timber, such as this Panga Panga, this becomes even more important. It’s now impossible to buy new flooring in this species and reclaimed parquet is hard and expensive to source. The new renovated surface not only significantly improves the floor’s appearance, but it also protects the rare timber with a new hard wearing, durable coat. If any scratches and dents do appear in the future, they can be treated quickly and easily.
