Outstanding feedback from customers in Surrey delighted with wide oak floor boards, KT4

We were delighted to take part in a major refurbishment project in a stunning detached home on one of Surrey’s exclusive residential roads. We installed wide engineered oak boards of various lengths in a recent open plan extension, the existing living room and the hallway.

Wide oak boards add the finishing touch

We contributed to a major refurbishment project in a stunning four bedroom detached home on one of Surrey’s exclusive residential roads. The modernisation work had been completed to an exceptional standard and expectations for the floor were high. The owners were experienced at managing refurbishments and were very particular and clear about the improvements that they wanted to see. After some research for expert craftsmanship, the owners chose Fin Wood to deliver their new wooden floors. We installed wide engineered oak boards (210mm) of various lengths in the expansive open plan kitchen and living space with bi-fold doors overlooking a beautifully landscaped garden, a separate downstairs living room and the hallway.

Starting with a robust subfloor

As ever before we started work on the floor it was important to make sure the subfloor was robust. The subfloor, particularly in the kitchen, needed some extra care as previously removed tiles had left the subfloor in a bad condition. We had to carefully grind off the left-over adhesive to ensure we had a sound flat floor to work with. We laid a latex self levelling compound to flatten out the surface. We used a liquid damp proof membrane to protect the new wooden floor against any residual moisture.

A seamless, symmetrical floor

The extension provided a large open plan area perfect for all the family and we planned a seamless, symmetrical floor to suit the space. We carefully calculated the best layout for the new wooden floor including measuring the distance between the walls to make sure the boards were parallel, and then we checked that the light would work well with the direction of the boards.

Complimentary change of direction

We recommended effective changes of direction of the boards to compliment the light in the rooms and its use. We felt it would be beneficial to change the direction of the boards between the hallway and the open plan kitchen diner as we wanted the boards in the kitchen diner to run towards the beautiful views in the garden. But we also recommended the boards run lengthwise rather than sideways the hallway to showcase the beauty of the oak. The only solution here was a neat change of direction. After discussing the options with our customers, we also agreed the boards in the living room should run parallel to the windows rather than towards, as we would normally recommend, due to the way the room would be used and the layout of the TV.

Seamless transition to the garden

The extension boasts wall to wall bi-folding doors overlooking a beautifully landscaped South West facing garden. Along these high spec bifold garden doors, we achieved a seamless join without using any unnecessary and bulky trims or profiles. At Fin Wood we are committed to paying close attention to the detail and we seek to avoid fittings that ruin the clean look of the floor.
