2020 Best Nine
#CraftedForLife
2020, over and out… It was definitely an unexpected one for us all. As the year comes to a close, it’s a natural time to reflect and count our blessings.
Thankfully we managed to overcome the sudden lockdown challenges with a determined effort to safely keep working. But there is still the anticipation of what the next year will bring with the long awaited impact of Brexit on the market and the impact of the covid vaccination...
Despite all the difficulties it's been an amazing year for us. All of our jobs postponed due to covid were rescheduled and now completed. With plenty more projects set for 2021 we would welcome another pair of skilled hands. If you know any good craftsmen looking for work let us know.
So... here it is our top nine projects as voted by our fantastic followers on Instagram! Seems like the classic oak chevron was the favourite ahead of exotic woods but happy to see my personal favourite end grain featuring so highly.
Hope you've had a lovely Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you all!
1. All round great job
Timeless Oak Chevron adds classic stile to luxury Mayfair Mansion apartment, W1K
Everyone appreciates the wonderful elegant pattern of chevron. It was such a great design choice to combine the subtle light colour of the oak and the darker walnut tramline border. The contrast really highlights the beauty of the oak.
The dark border draws your attention to the edges of the room and the additional design details such as the traditional radiators, skirting boards, doors and fireplaces, making the rooms feel much bigger. The project was a delight to carry out and such good teamwork, well planned by us, the owner and the designer. A great job all round.
2. One of a kind project
This was truly a one of a kind project. We were recognised by an international commercial partner for our end grain craftsmanship and commissioned to carry out this special job. We love to look back at the grain direction and pattern and the consistent square shape of the blocks producing its own irresistible design.
It was a unique opportunity to showcase our passion for end grain. In the wood floor world we have boards, parquet and end grain and in our opinion end grain floors surpass traditional boards and parquet. We were happy to do an end grain project in a commercial space where so many people can enjoy it.
3. Storytelling boards
Reclaimed Victorian pine boards restored for a smart, natural, sustainable finish, W1G
Normally we try not to restore pine floor boards because pine is a soft wood and sanding can significantly weaken them especially if they are a structural part of the sub floor. But we judge each home on an individual basis and this case was different as reclaimed boards were installed over a subfloor which gave it more structural strength. In this way we could sand and restore without any compromise.
Our restoration brought all the defects and character gained through the decades back to life. We especially liked the dark stains where the old clasp nails had rusted into the boards, those stains had deepened over the decades and this effect cannot be imitated. It’s fascinating to see boards as storytellers and imagine the Victorians and Edwardians families of the past living their lives over them.
4 The Cinderella project
Vintage French oak chevron brings 19th century elegance to Bloomsbury Mansion flat, WC1B
This was a really nice refurb project featuring oak chevron throughout the whole apartment. Once the traditional cast iron radiators came in and the high walls were painted everything came together and the floor really shone - it had a real Cinderella effect.
The owner was a German gentleman who was fascinated with the history of London and wanted to authentically restore the vintage mansion apartment. He made great choices and we were happy to craft this floor for him and contribute to a fantastic refurbishment.
5 Vertical home
Engineered Oak Wood Flooring fitted in award winning eco apartment in Kensington, W8
I remember this project had an impressively large surface of continued wood floor all throughout the modern building. We kept the joints and transitions simple and seamless to compliment the minimalist style of the property. The property was spread over five mezzanine floors including bedrooms separated by a few steps. To tie this horizontal property together we cladded it in the same wood to bring all the rooms and small hallways into one home. Our signature seamless stair cladding worked a treat producing that wonderful waterfall steps effect.
6 Strongest species in the world
Rich, dark Brazillian Ipe Walnut wood in Kensington flat London SW5
Ah, another one of a kind project :) So happy to install one of the top three strongest hard woods on the planet! It put our tools and skills to the test and produced a fantastic result. The rich colour of Ipe is hard to mimic. It has such a deep dark colour and yet has such striking colour variations that you might think some boards were from a different species altogether. We worked hard to make sure the finished result showcased Ipe’s exotic beauty but was still pleasant and not too wild! Another personal favourite :)
7 Patience and trust
Premium quarter sawn oak replaces flood soaked tiles in large family home in Wimbledon village, SW19
We love working with our return customers. It's confirmation that our craftsmanship is respected and our customer care appreciated. After we successfully completed the upstairs of the house the customers gained confidence and came to us quickly to ask for our help when they discovered a flood downstairs. Following our advice they were willing to wait as long as we needed to get the floor dry again. We remember this fondly as project patience and trust.
8 Subfloor science
Elegant herringbone parquet and much needed stability to a bouncing floor in Richmond TW9
This project was all about fixing the subfloor and our extensive subfloor knowledge proved very very useful. The customer researched heavily for a flooring specialist with experience in subfloors and he found us. I was surprised how much he knew about subfloors and we were able to discuss lots of options and share ideas. This was good because his bouncing floor was a serious situation and he could understand the remedies. In the end the complicated subfloor reconstruction surpassed elegant parquet installation.
9 Showpiece staircase
Beautifully precise oak stair cladding completes modern rebuild in Wimbledon village, SW19
We were contacted by the main contractor for our stair cladding expertise. After many years of cladding stairs there is still more to explore but we have a wealth of knowledge and are well able to achieve the desired results. The new contemporary staircase was a main feature of this newly refurbished home. We crafted our signature seamless stair cladding over three floors. As a showpiece staircase there was no room for mistakes. We needed accurate cuts, fit and joints, any small gaps would be on show for all to spot. We knew we had to do it well and we did!
