After so many wooden floors installed we should be accustomed by now with their effect yet it is not so. Here, once again, with this project we were amazed of the profound change brought by this rustic oak boards.
The subfloor was covered with carpet and a few layers of underlay and hardboard thoroughly nailed and tacked to our disappointment. Once this much appreciated stage was completed we could focus on the more serious work. The pine boards were strengthened, the skirting undercut in the hallway and removed in the lining room. Now a proper alignment and symmetry could be calculated and marked. Considering the awkward angles of the inner walls and of the fireplace in the adjacent living room we found the starting line and set it in the hallway.
To create a discreet finish for the step which separates the hallway from the kitchen we chose a seamless joint between the riser and the perpendicular hallway boards. Thus a nosing wasn't used which might have created a threshold effect.
The skirting boards was fitted also with a great deal of adjustments since the awkward walls were not helping.
