Hardboard is a traditional board commonly used for floor covering and levelling of old floor boards. It gives a clean smooth surface which allows you to apply various floor coverings of your choice. One face is smooth while the other is textured to give grip on the surface, however a ring shanked nail or staple will still be required. Available in 3mm thickness 2 specific sizes of 1220x610mm and 2440x1220mm.
Hardboard is manufactured from fine wood fibres, making it cost effective and can be used for various applications. Hardboard, also called high-density fiberboard (HDF), is a type of fiberboard, which is an engineered wood product.
It is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard, but is denser and much stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. Consequently, the density of hardboard is usually about 800–1,040 kg/m3. It differs from particle board in that the bonding of the wood fibers requires no additional materials, although resin is often added. Unlike particle board, it will not split or crack.
Hardboard has long been used in furniture, but it is also popular for use in the construction industry and with trades as a temporary floor protector. Hardboard has become less popular over recent years due to new environmental targets in the construction industry[6] to procure more sustainable temporary protection materials.

- Multi purpose use
Application
Hardboard can be used for a variety of functions e.g. floor covering, general decorative projects, signs, displays, doors, panels, backing for wardrobes, cabinets and bottom of drawers, etc. Hardboard has one smooth and one coarse side, the coarse side is used faced down to give extra grip on the surface although it does need be nailed down for permanent fixtures. Hardboard is only 3mm thick which makes it very easy to work with using conventional wood working tools. It also offers flexibility due to its thin profile, making it suitable for projects where you might need slight flexibility. The face of the board is coloured in brown, which can be painted or covered over with vinyl, wood flooring and other products.
